The best Adult Family Home is not simply the prettiest home. It is the home that can safely meet the resident’s needs while providing a comfortable environment and good communication with the family.
Start with the resident, not the building
Before comparing homes, write down what the resident actually needs today: mobility support, medication help, bathing, toileting, dementia supervision, nighttime assistance, dietary considerations, and preferred routines. Also think about what may reasonably change over the next year.
What to observe during a tour
- Does the home feel clean, calm, and well maintained?
- Are walking paths and common areas easy to navigate?
- Do bathrooms and entrances match the resident’s accessibility needs?
- Do staff interactions feel respectful and unhurried?
- Does the home feel residential rather than institutional?
- Are residents’ rooms comfortable and personalized?
Questions to ask the provider
- What happens if care needs increase?
- How is overnight care handled?
- How are medications managed?
- How do you communicate with families?
- What care situations would the home be unable to safely manage?
- How are rates and additional care charges explained?
Review licensing and written agreements
Families should review current licensing information, the admission agreement, the fee schedule, house policies, and any required disclosures before making a final decision. Do not rely only on verbal promises.
Trust what you observe
A tour should leave you with a clear sense of the home’s atmosphere. Pay attention to how staff speak with residents, whether questions are answered directly, and whether the provider is comfortable discussing both the home’s strengths and its limitations.
